True, but there is 'fighting from the clinch'. As you mentioned earlier.

I call it the clinch game, it's a strategy employed by some boxers such as hatton when they are fighting someone with superior hand speed or things like that. They throw punches, clinch, throw a few in the clinch, and try and catch the other fighter with punches on the way out of it.

I get the feeling you've never seen a boxing match before. I don't know of any modern fighter who employs this strategy. This isn't mma or muay thai. Maybe it seems like that to a completely ignorant fan though. A fighter like Hatton DOESN'T want to clinch. "Clinching" is a defensive maneuver in boxing, not offensive. A guy who wants to fight inside (frequently the shorter guy or the brawler) gets his gameplan squashed by a fighter who punishes him on the way in, then ties him up ("clinching"). This stalls the fight and the ref separates the two forcing the brawler to have to take punishment coming in again. The boxer then ties the fighter up before he can accomplish anything. Repeat. Granted, the brawler may slip a hand free and land a short ineffective punch or two, but this is hardly his gameplan. And this "dirty boxing" nonsense. jesus christ ryan. its called "dirty boxing" because some boxers (Hopkins for instance) will throw rabbit punches and strikes while pulling the head down on the side AWAY FROM THE REFEREE so he can't see it, because its illegal. You can't knee, you can't elbow, you can't punch while holding your opponent period, so please ryan--tell me what this "clinch game" is.

exactly. the whole idea is to avoid "teh clinchies"

look gumby, i'm not saying that they never use the word clinch. its just not a boxing term. if you say "tied-up" in the context of boxing, it automatically has a specific meaning; a meaning with specific connotation you wouldn't find if the word was used in any other context. if you say clinching in the context of boxing, it means what the oxford english dictionary says is the 1st denotative meaning, nothing more. if you say clinching in the context of muay thai discussion, it has a different meaning; one specific to muay thai, with specific connotations. I will say that because of the growth of mma, you will begin to see more of an overlap of terminology by the newfags. Eventually the newfags will become oldfags and those interchangeable terms will become permanent; evolution of language. However, even though "the clinch" may indeed become a frequent term in the boxer's lexicon, it will never have the same meaning.
