As if the ranks at the top end of the UFC heavyweight division couldn’t get any thinner, they just did. According to a report by Yahoo’s Steve Cofield, Gabriel Gonzaga has had to withdraw from a Jan. 2 bout with Junior dos Santos due to a staph infection. MMAWeekly.com independently confirmed Gonzaga’s withdrawal with sources close to the promotion.

The UFC heavyweight injured reserve/unable to perform list now includes champion Brock Lesnar (who has an intestinal disorder), Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (who also has staph), Shane Carwin (knee surgery), and Gonzaga.

About the only heavyweight contenders still healthy or don’t have a fight already scheduled are Dos Santos and Cain Velasquez, although sources indicated it was unlikely that the two would meet any time soon.

The carnage in the heavyweight division has caused a recent shuffling of the deck for UFC officials. Lesnar versus Carwin was intended to headline UFC 106, then pushed back to UFC 108, before being shelved indefinitely. Nogueira versus Velasquez was then slotted in for the UFC 108 main event before the Brazilian’s withdrawal.

Tito Ortiz versus Forrest Griffin 2 was then moved into the headline position at UFC 106, and former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans’ fight with Thiago Silva has been elevated to top billing at UFC 108.
they should make JDS vs Velasquez now

This is getting out of control.

JDS would murder Cain.

yeah that'd be interesting. JDS wins 9 outta 10 times, but it'd be an exciting match.

I don't think dos Santos could beat him in a kickboxing match, but he could take him down and choke him out with the quickness.

JDS is quite overrated imo. I think Cain is overrated too but I'd give the fight to Cain.

i think jds would win as well. cain would be able to get takedowns, but he wouldn't be able to hold dos santos down and win rounds. junior by stoppage

It's not that he's won, it's how he looked in the process. He's aggressive, fast, hits like a truck, and is supposed to have a damn good ground game under the Nog's. He also trains with Blackhouse, not a bad way to get better.

But even still I doubt it. Getting KO'd by Rogers was a huge detriment.

gonzaga was scared, now he'll fight some can when hes back from injury. Gonzaga cant hang with top HW's but has a huge fanbase for some reason so the ufc might look at this as a good thing, keep gonzaga in the win column for even longer bc JDS would have knocked his fucking head off.

now gonzaga is spared that embarrassment for the moment, and the ufc with its thin HW roster will most likely give him a can upon his return.

gonzaga has a huge fanbase? i never would have thought that. he beats cans and loses to big names. i'm wondering when he gets his walking papers.

its bc of the crocop fight, it put him on the map. People that go to ufc live events say that gonzaga usually gets the biggest ovation out of any fighter. It makes sense his loses are forgetful but his win against crocop was pretty fuckin memorable that shit was brutal.

This is true. At UFC 102 he had probably the second biggest ovation (besides Randy).
