View Full Version : wig's contest thread
as much as i hate to say it, its pretty much been proven over and over again that an elite/stong wrestler beats an elite jj stylist about 10/10 times. Considering that both of them are only strong in those areas and have shit standup.
fine contest accepted. let pick a list of ten fighters who fit each category, then we can list out the wins via cross reference. sound good?
I said I changed my mind. I bet I can think of close to as many examples of great JJ beating great wrestling as you can the opposite.
So heres the deal. 10 expert bjj vs 10 expert wrestlers. whichever group has more wins over the other in which neither person had or used decent standup.
Expert BJJ:
Maia
Jacare
Gonzaga
Werdum
Expert Wrastling:
Randy
Lindland
Hendo
Sonnen
Brock
waiting on wig for more.
I was thinking about this whilst tinkering around the house, and I know I'm going to struggle.
But considering the fact that none of the BJJ guys you listed have fought any, or many, good wrestlers I'm going to pick other guys. Only guys any of the jits guys have faces who are great wrestlers are Sonnen and Tuchscherer off the top of my head.
Fedor has:
Coleman x2
Randleman
Lindland
Nog:
Couture
Hendo
Coleman

Hendo's stand up is "decent" imo
Just to be clear, it only counts if he uses that his grappling to win, right?
I can't use Penn/Sherk is what I'm saying.

missed the 'used' part
Yeah I don't think it should be like that. If an elite wrestler uses his wrestling to beat an elite BJJ guy, that should count. No matter what happened earlier in the fight. Too many factors start getting involved.
I'm not talking about knocking a guy down and subbing him. Like if Timmeh was a wrestler, I wouldn't count that as one for Fedor

What about the Gracies and all the wrestlers they have beat over the years?

Fedor shouldn't count as a BJJ guy.
Also - add Hughes to the wrestler list.

wish I had a dollar for every time I've watched "Choke" but as much as I love the Gracies, they were dominating back in the days when nobody knew what an armbar WAS much less how to defend one.
see how quickly Hughes runs through Renzo for details.

it doesn't matter but. That wasnt said at the start of the thread. We never spoke about what era we are basing these victories from.

An older Royce vs. a prime Hughes isn't a good example, IMO.

Exactly. This is really a silly argument when you consider Royce/Severn, which is essentially what we're talking about.

it wouldve ended the same so long as royce didnt wear the gi

Addition to the excellent BJJ category: Ross Pointon.

No, I'm actually agreeing with you for once.

ok this makes sense to me. but he cant daze him with punches and then take him down and tko him.

maybe we should start with the good wrastlers as there are a few more of them and go from there?
I think there are a lot more elite wrestlers than there are elite BJJ guys. The UFC in particular is full of them

too many elite bjj guys only do grapplng tournys like adcc
Yeah for sure. Or there are several with records like 2-0 or 1-1. Seems they don't like getting hit often times.

And to back this up, you thought a 3 time national champ was just an ok wrestler. If a jits guy with equal credentials was fighting it would be a big deal

And Severn also outweighed Royce by about 50/60 lbs.

All-American maybe?
