I love these "Hype vs Talent" matches. The way I analyze are these ways

"Big" match experience - Obviously, UFC matches are as big as they get. But it's also pretty big if you fight a name. For example, if you're on a smaller show, and you fight a guy like Edwin Dewees or Drew Fickett, who used to fight UFC, you know you're fighting someone who if you beat, gains you some instant recognition. Also, title matches in lesser orgs. KOTC, GC, all them good things.

Training camp - Pretty obvious reason. If you're training at butt fuck nowhere, Nebraska, I won't like your camp much. But if you train with one of the 'big' places (ATT, AKA, Gracie, Miletich, Team Quest, etc) then that changes everything. There's a reason that Judo chink is training with ATT.

Lastly, the stylistic match. Look at the "hype" fighter's biggest weakness. Then look to see where that stands on the depth chart of the "talent" fighter's ability. Example would be Lesnar/Mir. I knew Brock's HUUUGE weakness would be subs. And so to me, the obvious pick was Mir 1st round sub. For the record, I have gotten 11 points on all three Lesnar fights in the UFC so far, and I got 7 on his first.


Here's the way I see this fight shaking down. Frankly, we've never seen Gonzaga on his ass look impressive. Of course he has very good subs, but I don't remember seeing him lock in a triangle or an armbar from guard. Last time I remember him getting put on his ass, Randy pounded him out, and then Werdum pounded him out. Shane Carwin is easily one of the best wrestlers in the HW division. Even though God knows I don't wanna, I'm gonna side with Solid.

Gonzaga is obviously more well rounded, but both of them have questionable cardios if it goes past the first round. Gonzaga will be gassed in the 2nd, while Carwin has never made it past the first 3 minutes in a fight, so who knows about him. I want to go with Gonzaga, but I could easily see Gonzaga being unconscious at the end of this fight. Gonzaga should get the fight to the ground if he can.
